For the past several years, Penn Libraries has been broadening efforts to acquire materials related to South Asian diasporas, supported by both increased interest on campus as well as new financial contribution from the Singh Family Fund. This initiative has sparked the growth of a substantive Indo-Caribbean collection that strives to reveal histories, communities, and cultural expressions that have remained underrepresented in most research libraries and understudied in scholarly discourse. Our diasporic materials from the Caribbean represent a variety of publication genres and expressive forms, including commercial publications for popular consumption, scholarly analyses for academic audiences, as well as visual imagery and ephemera. Thematic strengths include indenture, politics, and culture. Together, these histories provide a range of perspectives in a variety of Caribbean contexts. Studies of political matters and writings of national leaders also form a notable portion of the collection. For example, Deadlock! Cultural studies in the collection focus on matters of arts, religion, and gender. What is different in Sastra is that the bulk of its action is devoted to a love story narrated in an elaborate and somewhat stilted diction reminiscent of Victorian novels. Not only that, Sastra also reproduces some of the supernatural flavour that helps to make Wuthering Heights such an absorbing drama of thwarted love and dying passion.

The lovers in Sastra – Rabindranath Pande and the eponymous Sastra Narayan – come from fairly well-to-do Hindu families who are upwardly mobile in the sense that their children have access both to secondary school and to professional study abroad.

Indo-Guyanese or Indian-Guyanese , are Guyanese nationals who trace their ancestry to the Indian subcontinent. They are the descendants of settlers who arrived between the 19th and 20th centuries from the former pre-partitioned sub-continent of India during the time of the British Raj. Most of the Indian settlers who came to Guyana were from North India , specifically from the Bhojpur and Awadh regions of the Hindi Belt located in the present-day states of Uttar Pradesh , Bihar , and Jharkhand , however a significant minority came from South India.

The vast majority of Indians came as contract laborers during the 19th century, spurred on by political upheaval, the ramifications of the Mutiny of , and famine. Others arrived as merchants, landowners and farmers pushed out by many of the same factors. On May 5, , the year in which the abolition of slavery was finalized in the British West Indies and the beginning of the indentured labor system , Indian immigrants popularly known as the ‘Gladstone Coolies’ landed in British Guiana from Calcutta in the Bengal Presidency region of British India.

This dissertation examines the relationship between bodily shapeshifting in the literature of the Asian Indian Caribbean and the construction of postcolonial Indo-Caribbean identity. Metamorphosis, in opposition to hybridity, is the lens through which I examine the political and literary relationship between the Indo- and Afro-Caribbean. In contrast to creolization, mestizaje, and other hybridizations, various forms of metamorphosis, including mimicry and doubling, provide agency in the colonial and postcolonial context.

Metamorphosis suggests ways of intervening in the historic ethnic and political divides in postcolonial Caribbean nations like Trinidad and Guyana. It is thus the key literary figure deployed in the texts under consideration. The Indo-Caribbean is a distinct subgenre within Anglophone Caribbean literature that includes works produced by the descendants of nineteenth-century East Indian indentured laborers in, primarily, Trinidad and Guyana.

Most of the texts examined in this dissertation are written and set in the s and beyond, i.

Watching this movie as a child, I felt that line in every fiber of my being. As an Indo-Guyanese American, identity can be a complicated subject. I grew up regularly confronting questions about my identity. The only other brown kids in my elementary and secondary school were my relatives. There were a handful of Caribbean kids, but they were Afro-Caribbean. Their connection to the Caribbean were their parents or grandparents and they were ignorant of the fact that people from the Caribbean could look like me too.

They heard my name, saw my face and decided I was Indian. Just about everyone was some kind of brown, so I blended in though no one else was my kind. I related to a lot of different aspects of Hawaiian culture as much of it felt so familiar to me. They too had stories of ancestors who relegated to working on the plantations, and they too had their own version of Creole.

No one saw me as a specific kind of brown. A compilation of the many influences in my life, including my double hyphenated culture. It took more than two decades and a mile journey, but I eventually figured it out.
