A 1Th is an obvious postC. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them to the uttermost. Note: both ‘apokteino’ and ‘ekdioko’ show in Lk, relative to prophets and apostles: ” I will send to them prophets and apostles , and of these shall they [teachers of the Law] kill and drive out by persecution” Darby c In 1Co, Paul mentioned “the rulers of this age” crucified Jesus and NOT the Jews killed him. B 1Th is another addition: “and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead — Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath. However, that appears only here in all the Pauline epistles.
1 Thessalonians – Introducing Paul
Interesting post. Obviously, there are host of old thorny issues involved in dating Galatians — most of which twist around what one does with Acts specifically for questions of provenance and the Jerusalem council. I’ll not retread any of that ground here. Mainly because the issue of dating the letter to the Galatians a precise point on the timeline can not be precisely correlated with the Galatian crisis a range of time and the point at which Paul “writes off” the Galatians with respect to the collection a sort of end point — however it is questionable whether it should be considered ultimate in the relationship of Paul and the churches there.
Big YES on Galatians! Lou Martyn dates Galatians early simply because there’s no mention of the collection.

This letter reveals Paul’s pastoral concern for a particular individual and his confidence that the faith and love that Christians share in Christ can be energized by discerning what it means to do a “good deed” in particular instances. As is true for Philemon, so the partnership of faith in Christian community offers the support and encouragement that enables action that goes beyond even what is asked or imagined.
Paul’s letter to Philemon is the eighteenth book in the New Testament. As the shortest of Paul’s letters words , it is situated at the end of the “Pauline corpus,” which has been traditionally arranged not by date but from the longest to the shortest Romans through Philemon. The opening word identifies Paul as the author of this letter. Although he adds Timothy’s name as a coauthor, within the main body of the letter his appeal is repeatedly singular and personal using “I” and “me”.
At one point he makes pointed reference to his “writing this with my own hand” as he in effect writes an IOU to cover any losses that Philemon may have experienced

The letter was written from Corinth. Paul acknowledged that the successful development had been wrought in the Thessalonians by their own acceptance, fully recognizing the human frailty of the Apostle, their founder —12 , and not by a mistaken understanding that he himself was divine. After having dwelt so extensively on his being moved by the change in the Thessalonians , Paul continues to state that therefore they have no reason for giving up faith in the face of the death of some fellow Christians, who had died between their conversion and the expected imminent Parousia of Christ.
Apparently, they had expected the Parousia and final salvation as the promise of the Christian message. In chapter 5 there is further thanksgiving, emphasizing the present gift and power of Christian faith and corporate Christian life. This emphasis is linked with ethical applications, with stress on brotherhood, diligence in keeping the faith, and religious industriousness. The encouragement of the Thessalonians was introduced in chapter 4 by a genuinely ethical exhortation to proceed properly on the way to holiness and sanctification already begun.
A feature of II Thessalonians that resembles the otherwise most unusual feature of I Thessalonians is its excessively long thanksgiving.

New Testament letters were almost certainly written by Paul himself: 1 Thessalonians, Galatians, Philippians, Philemon, 1 and 2 Corinthians, and Romans.
In Acts , while on his second missionary journey, the Apostle Paul and his companions established the church in Thessalonica. After only a brief time in the city, dangerous opposition arose from those who thought Paul’s message was a threat to Judaism. Since Paul had to leave these new converts sooner than he wanted to, he sent Timothy back to Thessalonica at his earliest opportunity to check on the church.
When Timothy rejoined Paul in Corinth, he had good news: despite intense persecution, the Christians in Thessalonica were standing firm in the faith. Thus, Paul’s primary purpose for writing the epistle was to encourage, comfort, and strengthen the church. He also answered some of their questions and corrected a few misconceptions about the resurrection and Christ’s return.

Most scholars think that the first letter to the Thessalonians is the very first piece of Christian writing we possess. It is a letter sent by the Apostle Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus, to a community of Christians he had founded in Thessalonica, a city in Greece. In this unit we will look at the story of Paul and use the letter to the church in Thessalonica to see what it can tell us about him and the early Christian communities. Paul and other first generation missionaries were responsible for the movement of the Christian communities beyond Palestine into Asia Minor and the Mediterranean world.

Navigating the dating world as a Christian is a difficult task. Is it OK to make the first move? Jesus gave value to women in a culture where they were considered as property. He elevated women and empowered women to spread the Gospel, while also pursuing them. He actively pursued His bride — the church — by sacrificing Himself in her place. If women are to submit to their husbands in this same way, then women should at least be open to the idea of allowing men to pursue them.

Consequently, there will always be a certain amount of storytelling, speculation, and uncertainty involved in determining when the epistles were written for at least three reasons:. Acts 28ers , then you are standing on the weak foundation of higher criticism, and you would do well to change your theology. The Bible believer would do well to remember that what is clear is always more important than what is not. What Paul said is always more important than when he said it.
The way that 1 Thessalonians is able to be dated so early is through Paul’s Thus, what I want to call into question is the idea that we can date 1 Thessalonians.
